Children Hospital

Hospitals, by their very nature, can be intimidating places, particularly for children. The unfamiliar surroundings, coupled with the reason for their visit, can escalate feelings of nervousness and anxiety, not just among the pediatric patients but also their parents and guardians. The challenge lies in mitigating these feelings and transforming the hospital experience into a more positive and less daunting one. Pediatric care units, especially those specializing in longterm treatments such as oncology, require innovative solutions to address these emotional and psychological challenges.

Task

In 2020, Lusens was approached by several oncology hospitals with a unique and challenging task: to design and install a children's center equipped with interactive games that utilize touch, body motion, and gesture recognition technologies. The primary goal was to engage, entertain, and, most importantly, calm the kids during their hospital stays, while simultaneously promoting physical activity and interaction among multiple children.

01 // Project Overview

Case Study: Revolutionizing Pediatric Care with Interactive Experiences

In the high stress environment of hospitals, pediatric patients and their families often experience heightened levels of anxiety and fear. Recognizing the critical need to create a more welcoming and calming atmosphere for young patients, Lusens embarked on a transformative journey to revolutionize pediatric care by designing and introducing custom-designed touch and body motion interactive and immersive games that stimulate children’s  imagination and encourages movements.

02 // Challenges

The task at hand presented several significant challenges:

1. Designing AgeAppropriate Interactions: Creating games that are not only engaging and entertaining but also suitable for a wide range of ages and physical abilities.

2. Ensuring Medical Compliance and Safety: Integrating technology into a medical environment required strict adherence to health and safety regulations, ensuring the interactive installations were safe and hygienic for immunocompromised patients.

3. Creating a Collaborative Environment: Facilitating an interactive experience that encourages participation from multiple children simultaneously, fostering a sense of community and support among patients.

4. Technical Integration: Seamlessly integrating advanced interactive technologies into the hospital’s existing infrastructure without disrupting medical operations.

03 // Approach

Our work

Lusens’ team embarked on this project with a clear vision and a deep understanding of the unique needs of pediatric hospital settings. The development process involved close collaboration with medical professionals, child psychologists, and technology experts to create a suite of interactive experiences tailored to the sensitivities and interests of pediatric patients.

Interactive Experiences Developed:

  • TouchBased Games: Easy-to-use, engaging games that allow children to interact using touch, catering to younger patients or those with limited mobility.
  • Body Motion and Gesture Recognition Games: Advanced games that respond to body movements and gestures, encouraging physical activity and providing a fun outlet for energy release.

Innovation and Impact

    • Customized Content: The games were designed with customizable difficulty levels to cater to different age groups and abilities, ensuring inclusivity.
    • Hygienic and Safe: Utilizing technology that minimizes the need for direct contact, coupled with easy to clean surfaces, ensured the installations met the highest standards of hygiene and safety.
    • Social Interaction: By allowing multiple children to play simultaneously, the installations fostered a sense of camaraderie and support among patients, crucial for emotional wellbeing.
    • Seamless Integration: The installations were carefully designed to integrate into the hospital’s environment without impeding medical staff or operations, ensuring a harmonious addition to the pediatric wards.
